Are you disconnected from more than your body?
Did you know you can function, succeed, and even help others and still be completely disconnected from your body?
You might be outwardly doing all the right things. Showing up. Working hard. Caring for others. But the difference lies in how you feel inside.
There are three key signs that often point to disconnection from the body, signs that many of us live with every day, without realising the cost.
1. The Overactive Mind
You analyse, overanalyse, plan constantly, and replay conversations in your mind. It feels like your thoughts never stop. Your inner world is all happening in your head… and your body? It’s not even in the picture. You might know you’re tired or tense, but you barely register it. You’re not in your body, you’re thinking about your body, if at all.
2. Thinking Your Feelings
This one can be subtle. You might say, “I know I should be angry,” but you don’t actually feel the anger. Not in your chest, your belly, your jaw, your fists. You talk about your feelings, name them, analyse them… but the actual sensation, the embodied experience of them, stays out of reach. This creates a kind of emotional numbness, even when you’re mentally aware something’s wrong.
3. Frustration with Body Signals
You push through exhaustion. You get annoyed at tension, at pain, at your body’s need to slow down. Body signals confuse or frustrate you, and often you interpret them as anxiety. Rather than listening, you override. Rather than responding, you disconnect.
Why living in your body matters.
All of this matters more than we realise.
Living outside your body creates disconnection… disconnection from yourself, from your relationships, and from your capacity for joy and pleasure.
Over time, this separation from the body can dull our emotional awareness, strain our nervous system, and make us feel increasingly isolated, even in lives that look “fine” from the outside.
How to Reconnect with Your Body and Heal Emotional Numbness
The good news is: healing begins when you come back to your body. Coming back to your body is the foundation of body psychotherapy.
At the Institute of Body Psychotherapy, we work with people who are ready to reconnect, not just to their thoughts, but to their felt experience. We help clients and students alike come back into relationship with their bodies, their emotions, and their intuition. Not by pushing or analysing, but by slowing down, sensing, and feeling.
Our training and therapeutic work is grounded in Core Energetics, a somatic approach that includes movement, breath, and energetic awareness. It’s a pathway not only to healing past wounds but also to reclaiming vitality and presence.
When you learn to inhabit your body again, something powerful happens: you begin to feel more alive. You begin to trust your instincts. You notice what you need and can respond, rather than react. Your relationships deepen. Your emotional landscape becomes richer. You’re no longer living from the neck up.
If you recognize yourself in any of these signs, you’re not alone. Many of us were taught to disconnect from the body in order to survive or succeed. But reconnection is possible and it can be beautiful.
This is the work we do.
